MZ-RH1 Compatible Display Modules

The MZ-RH1 is widely regarded as one of the best MiniDisc portables ever made. However, it suffers from a fatal flaw: the original OLED displays tend to dim significantly over time due to a manufacturing defect. Now, almost 20 years after its release, many MZ-RH1 units have become practically unusable because of this issue, with the displays becoming nearly impossible to read. Until recently, there were no repair parts available to address this problem — but that has changed!
I am pleased to present a replacement display module for the MZ-RH1. The module comes with two OLED displays, meaning that you can replace both OLEDs in your MZ-RH1 with a single module.

FAQ
Q: Is the module a drop-in replacement?
A: Revision F+ is a full drop-in replacement, no modifications to the internal plastic or electronics are needed. For revision F, the answer is yes and no. While no electrical modifications or soldering are required, some physical modification is necessary. To properly fit the module, a single small piece of plastic must be trimmed from the internal plastic bracket.
Q: What are there differences with the original display?
A: The new module uses modern OLED technology with a smaller pixel size, which results in sharper text but also slightly smaller content compared to the original display. Note that no details are lost as the visible resolution is the same, the content is just slightly smaller.
Q: Can anyone do the installation?
A: Installing this replacement display does require some technical skill. The MZ-RH1 is a delicate device, and improper handling during disassembly can easily damage the plastic components that hold the unit together. It is highly recommended to watch several instructional videos on YouTube that cover RH1 repairs before attempting the installation. If you’re not confident in your ability to perform the replacement, consider seeking help from someone with experience in electronics repair as per the guide below.
Q: Is there an installation guide available?
A: Yes! You can find it here: MZ-RH1 Display Module Installation Guide

Revisions
Revision | Date | Description |
---|---|---|
Rev-C | First prototype unit that was distributed among initial testers. | |
Rev-E | August 2024 |
First public version that was for sale to the general public.
Compared to Rev-C, it has an optimized form factor that simplifies installation and requires much less modifications to
the internal plastic of the RH1.
Early units of this revision, sold in late August / early September 2024, have a flaw where a static line might appear on the on the display. To prevent this, a single resistor should be removed from the RH1 mainboard to limit voltage overload. All buyers of this version have been contacted with detailed remediation instructions. Newer versions are not affected. |
Rev-E* | November 2024 | A slight revision of Rev-E with double sided adhesive pre-applied for simplified installation. |
Rev-F | March 2025 | This revision has thicker copper lines and a slightly different layout that improves strength. This makes the unit more robust to forceful installations as it is less prone to damage. |
Rev-F+ | June 2025 | This revision allows for installation without the need to modify the internal plastic bracket of the MZ-RH1. It is essentially a drop-in replacement for the original displays. |
